Product Details

Down Wash is made for regular and hydrophobic down, including down clothing and sleeping bags. It removes the dirt and body oils that can weigh down the fill and affect how the fabric performs. Used in a washing machine, it helps refresh insulation, breathability, and the Durable Water Repellency of the outer fabric and down fill. The result is cleaner gear with a better chance of staying lofty and comfortable in cold, damp conditions.

The process is straightforward, but down needs care. Use a gentle cycle with a slow spin, rinse thoroughly, and dry the item completely—ideally by tumble drying on low heat, while separating clumps as it dries. Down Wash is non-flammable and PFAS-free, and comes in 300 ml and 1 L sizes. For gear that has seen heavy use, Nikwax recommends Down Proof after cleaning to add DWR to the outer fabric and fill.

Washing Machine Use

Standard and high-efficiency front-loading machines.
Clothing: maximum of 2 garments; use 100 ml (3.5 fl oz).
Sleeping bags: maximum of 1 item; use 150 ml (5 fl oz).
Select a normal cycle with warm/cold water, slow spin, and an extra rinse if possible.
Remove detergent build-up from the dispenser before washing.
If a sleeping bag does not fit easily in the machine, use the hand-wash instructions.

Hand Washing

Use gloves.
For 1 clothing item or sleeping bag, add 100 ml (3.5 fl oz) to 12–15 L (3–4 gal) of warm water.
Immerse the item and agitate to ensure complete wetting.
Soak for 5 minutes, then agitate thoroughly.
Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.

Drying And Care

Slow-spin dry multiple times.
Dry using air only or a low-heat setting.
Separate clumps repeatedly during drying to help restore down loft.
Tumble drying is recommended to dry down thoroughly and quickly.
Leaving down wet or damp can ruin it completely.
Spinning too quickly while the item holds a large amount of water can break internal baffles.

Additional Guidance

Use when down items soak up water because DWR has been compromised by dirt or conventional laundry detergent.
Do not use conventional detergents.
Use Nikwax Stain Scrub on stubborn stains before washing.
Remove all non-washable parts.
For thoroughly used gear, apply Nikwax Down Proof after cleaning to add DWR to the outer fabric and down fill.
