Our Story

Monod Sports is an independent retailer located in Banff, Alberta.

We were established over 75 years ago.

Origins

Founder John Monod came to Banff from Switzerland in 1947 with ski gear, a Swiss watch, five dollars, and deep knowledge of skiing. In 1949, he leased a small wooden cabin at Sunshine Lodge, now known as Sunshine Village, and opened a small ski shop.

John combined ski guiding, instruction, and retail, importing high-quality skis, boots, bindings, and climbing skins from Europe. His gear quickly gained a strong reputation, and demand grew.

Before coming to Canada, John had also been involved in skiing in Chamonix, France, where he opened one of the early ski shops in the world in 1931. After World War II, he moved to Banff to rebuild and continue his work in the ski industry.

Growth in Banff

In 1954, John expanded into downtown Banff. His business included retail shops, ski schools, and rental operations. His reputation as a skier, instructor, and retailer became well known across Canada.

From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, John Monod and his ski schools reportedly taught more than 50,000 people to ski. Monod Sports also became a stop for well-known athletes and visitors.

1960s and 1970s

By the 1960s, the company had grown to include multiple ski schools, stores, and rental outlets in places such as downtown Banff, the Banff Springs Hotel, Mount Norquay, and Lake Louise.

John and his wife Kay helped run the expanding business. Monod Sports became known for carrying unique, high-quality products imported from Europe and other parts of the world.

In the 1970s, climbing became increasingly popular in the Canadian Rockies. Monod Sports was among the first Canadian retailers to bring in sought-after European climbing equipment. The store also partnered with Parks Canada and mountain rescue specialists to supply mountain rescue gear.

The Next Generation

In 1982, John’s sons Phil, Peter, and Nick Monod took over the business. They expanded it to include multiple retail and rental locations, a snowboard and mountain bike shop, a snowboard school, a windsurfing school, and a guided fly-fishing operation.

The brothers continued the tradition of importing specialized mountain gear and helped introduce brands such as Dynafit, Hanwag, Pomoca, Pieps, Ortovox, Edelrid, Millet, Cassin, DMM, Chouinard, Berghaus, and others to the Canadian market.

In 1989, Monod Sports moved into 129 Banff Avenue after purchasing and renovating the former Banff Café. Over time, the company chose to simplify and focus on one strong flagship store rather than many locations.

The 2000s and Today

Monod Sports continues to follow the original philosophy of excellent service, high-quality products, and knowledgeable staff. The store remains focused on operating one strong shop in Banff, staffed by people who use and test the gear in the nearby mountains.

Today, Monod Sports is still family owned and operated. Third-generation co-owners Nic Monod and Matt Monodcontinue the family tradition of offering premium mountain gear and specialized service.

Nic Monod, son of Peter Monod, joined the business after attending Camosun College in 2012. He enjoys skiing, ski touring, fly fishing, and golf.

Matt Monod, son of Nick Monod, grew up skiing and competed as a ski racer at national and international levels. He is also involved in coaching skiing and mountain biking and enjoys backcountry skiing, mountain biking, and climbing.

Current Identity

Monod Sports remains a premium mountain-goods shop in the Canadian Rockies. Its product selection is chosen each season to suit the Banff lifestyle. The company encourages visitors to stop by the store in Banff and experience what it describes as an iconic mountain shop.

The store is located at 129 Banff Avenue, Banff, Alberta.
